The “Aérostat dirigeable Dupuy de Lôme” is considered the first airship. It was designed by a Breton engineer, Henri Dupuy de Lôme.
The airship first flew on 2 February 1872 and was propelled by a man-powered propeller, the crew of 8 persons. It cost an equivalent of US$890000 in today’s money, because of an expensive silk fabric for the shell.
